My Thoughts on A24's Film The Farewell
On a historic day after Awkwafina won Best Actress at the 2020 Golden Globes, I watched The Farewell on air. She became the first Asian-American woman to win. A well-deserved recognition!
On a personal level, I deeply related to the tender and affectionate relationship that Billi shares with her grandmother. (Featuring my Gma here 👵🏻❤️ throwing up ✌🏻s for 2020 with me lol) Couldn’t watch it without tears 😭 Thank you director Lulu Wang @thumbelulu for an intimate and accurate portrayal of the Chinese-American experience.
Now thinking: where are my Korean American female directors?! Calling you out of hiding 😉
As a fellow Asian American female creative, I’m so proud to be part of a time where underrepresentation is - though slowly but surely (!!) - being addressed in media platforms.
Now that’s the media side, what about the music industry? I had a thought: Would we be able to witness an Asian American woman winning a Grammy in the 2020s? That would be so powerful 😭 #Grammys2020
To my Asian American women with moonshot dreams: We’re just getting started and the sky’s the limit. We may have a long way to go, but our time is coming. Let’s keep dreaming big and keep working our asses off!
